We were delighted to be invited to spend a couple of nights courtesy of Peterstone Court Hotel and Spa in the Brecon Beacons, a grade 2 listed, family-owned venue. On arrival we drove down a long winding path with sheep greeting us which really made us feel we were in the Welsh countryside and I have to say Peterstone Court is in a really tranquil location.
We had a warm welcome on arrival, the venue has an old worldly charm with lots of good quality antiques and interesting artefacts dotted around.
We were given a tour of the library (I threatened to beat Mark at chess) but the bar beckoned and we had a super egg mayonnaise sandwich sat in front of a roaring log fire which was heaven as the weather outside was pretty atrocious.
We were personally shown to our room which was a nice touch, we were up several flights of stairs so for less abled this may be a consideration to ask for a lower floor. Our room was super, really large, with an extremely comfortable bed and pillows, a fab comfy leather sofa and a luxurious armchair gave us plenty of seating options.
The bathroom was attractive with a beautiful bath tub and a large shower. Some great toiletry products (including sanitary products for ladies) were available. There was a lovely countryside view from the bath.
We had a super dinner in the dining room, a quirky set up over two rooms. I had a beef kofta which was very tasty and Mark had Game terrine, I had a very good steak with peppercorn sauce and some delectable triple cooked chips and Mark had traditional fish and chips which we both thoroughly enjoyed. We were too full for a dessert. We were also lucky enough to spot two very famous comedians who were staying in the hotel and having dinner!
Breakfast was excellent with a wide selection on offer. Some great pastries, juices, cereals and fruits were available as well as a hot selection to order and we enjoyed the full Welsh breakfast and pancakes.
During the day we popped into Crick Howell which is about fifteen minutes away and is a small Welsh town with a great furniture shop and a couple of other quirky shops to browse around and some good coffee shops.
As we were at Peterstone Court Hotel and Spa for Valentines Day we had booked their special dinner which was charged at £55 and I have to say was excellent value.
We were offered a complimentary red cocktail which got us in the spirit. The events space was beautifully decorated and was very intimate and romantic. We could image very elegant and enchanting weddings being held in this great event space. Again, two log fires were roaring making it warm and cosy and a baby grand piano was nestled in the corner of the room.
The food was amazing, we had scallops, champagne sorbet, pork tenderloin and then a trio of desserts. We can highly recommend the food; it was plentiful and very tasty and locally sourced. I would imagine guests at a wedding breakfast would be thrilled if this is the calibre of food served. The evening was magical. Five star indeed!
I have to say part of what made our stay at Peterstone Court Hotel and Spa so special were the staff, they were friendly, chatty, smiley and efficient. Even the cleaning ladies, who by the way had done an excellent job as we didn’t find a spot of dust, said hello and were pleasant.
The only thing we can’t comment on was the spa as we were too relaxed and happy to go and we had to leave something to do for when we return which we intend to do, hopefully in the summer when we will also be able to use the glorious outdoor swimming pool.
